Screenshot Not Working on Mac? 8 Fixes to Try

You press Shift-Command-4, the cursor does nothing, and the screenshot you needed has vanished. Annoying, but this one is usually easy to sort out. Most of the time the screenshot was taken and saved somewhere you did not expect, or one setting changed. Work through these in order.

First, know what normally happens

Apple’s documented shortcuts are:

  • Shift-Command-3 captures the whole screen.
  • Shift-Command-4 turns the pointer into a crosshair so you can drag over an area. Press Space bar after that to capture a single window.
  • Shift-Command-5 opens the Screenshot app with all the options in one toolbar.

After a capture you should see a small thumbnail in the corner of the screen. By default the file is saved to your desktop with a name like “Screen Shot [date] at [time]”.

1. Look for the screenshot before you assume it failed

Check your desktop, then look in the folder you last used. Apple notes that the save location can be changed in the Screenshot app’s Options menu, so a past setting might be sending files elsewhere. The thumbnail also stays on screen if you hover over it, which can hide the fact that the capture worked.

2. Press Shift-Command-5 and use the app instead

If the keyboard shortcuts do nothing but the Screenshot app opens, you know the feature itself works. Click Options and check three things: the Save to location, whether Show Floating Thumbnail is on, and the timer setting.

3. Check if it went to the clipboard

If you hold Control with the shortcut (for example Control-Shift-Command-3), the screenshot goes to the clipboard instead of a file. Apple also lets you Control-click the thumbnail and choose Save to Clipboard. If you tried that once, you may have been pasting your screenshot into a document without realizing. Try pressing Command-V in an email or a note.

4. Some apps do not allow screenshots

Apple states that some apps, such as the Apple TV app, might not let you take screenshots of their windows. If it only fails in one app, that is the likely reason. Try a different window to confirm.

5. Check the keyboard shortcut settings

Open System Settings, go to Keyboard, click Keyboard Shortcuts and look for the Screenshots section. Make sure the shortcuts are switched on and have not been changed. If another app has taken the same key combination, this is where the clash shows up. (Apple’s screenshot page does not walk through this menu, so the labels may vary slightly by macOS version.)

6. Try a different keyboard

If Shift-Command-3, 4 and 5 all do nothing, it might be a hardware or connection issue, not a setting. Plug in or pair a different keyboard, or try an on-screen keyboard, to rule it out. Our guide to fixing a Bluetooth keyboard or mouse that will not connect covers the wireless side.

7. Restart your Mac

It is the oldest advice in tech, and it works often enough to be worth the two minutes. Save your work first.

8. Update macOS

If it started right after an update, open System Settings, then General, then Software Update, and install any pending release. Apple has already shipped a bug-fix update for macOS 27 (27.0.1). Our guide to a Mac running slow after an update also helps if other things feel off.

New in macOS 27: shortcuts that look similar

Apple says that in macOS 27 Golden Gate with Siri AI (Beta) turned on, Command-Shift-Space bar asks Siri about the active window and Command-Shift-6 asks about a portion of the screen. They sit close to the screenshot shortcuts, so a slip of the finger can open Siri instead of taking a screenshot.
