Apple’s macOS 27 Golden Gate release notes are long, and most people only want to know one thing: is anything in here actually useful? Here are the changes that stand out, taken from Apple’s own support page, with a note on who they matter to.
1. Siri AI (Beta)
This is the headline. Apple describes Siri AI as an entirely new version of Siri powered by Apple Intelligence that is more personal, more capable and more conversational. It is built into Spotlight, so you can search for answers from the same place you search your Mac. It is a beta and it has requirements, which we cover in our guide to turning on Siri AI.
2. Visual Intelligence on your screen
You can select a window and ask Siri about what is on screen, or have it act on it, such as adding an event to your calendar. The shortcut is Shift-Command-Space bar.
3. Better photo editing
Apple lists Spatial Reframing to reframe a photo after it is taken, an Extend tool to expand a shot, and a better Clean Up tool for removing distractions.
4. Safari tab groups by topic, and “Notify Me”
Safari can automatically group tabs into topics. Notify Me watches pages for changes such as price drops or restocks and alerts you. This is probably the most practical everyday addition.
5. Describe a Shortcut
You can describe what you want in plain language and the Shortcuts app assembles the steps. Apple’s example is a shortcut that texts your partner an arrival time when you head home.
6. A tweak to Liquid Glass
Apple says updates to Liquid Glass improve readability, with a new slider that lets you go from ultra-clear to fully tinted. If the see-through look bothered you, this is the setting to look for.
7. Parental controls
New controls cover what content children can see, who they can communicate with and when they can use apps. Ask to Browse makes kids request permission before visiting a new website in Safari.
8. Faster everyday tasks
Apple says better search in Spotlight and Mail, and faster AirDrop transfers and network file browsing, are part of this release.
9. Smaller changes
These include Shared Albums improvements in Photos, SynthID watermark support for generated images, a reworked Home tab in Podcasts, and FaceTime support for adding a third-party sign-language interpreter or live captioner.
Should you update right away?
That depends on your Mac and how much you depend on it. First check whether your Mac is on Apple’s compatibility list, then back up. Apple has already released macOS 27.0.1, which it describes as bug fixes. Battery life after a big update is a common worry, so we cover it in our macOS 27 battery drain guide. Apple also notes that software updates can affect performance or battery life.
